President’s Cup 2015
A group of sailors from Belfast Lough Sailability represented Ulster over the weekend of 22 and 23 August in the Sailability Ireland Presidents Cup inter-provincial disabled sailing championship at the Royal Irish Yacht Club, Dun Laoghaire. Named after past-President of the International Federation for Disabled Sailing, John Twomey, the event is to encourage sailors with disabilities to compete in some of the classes sailed at Paralympic and International level.
Ten sailors from each of the four provinces sailed in Hansa 303s, SKUD 18s, Squibs and 2.4-Metres for this prestigious prize. Team Ulster was headed up by Belfast Lough Sailability based at Carrickfergus Co Antrim with requests for competitors from Foyle Sailability and Carlingford Lough Sailability.
The resultant team enjoyed competitive racing along with other teams from Munster, Leinster and Connaught. The sheltered waters of Dun Laoghaire Harbour provided an opportunity for two days of close racing. Leinster was the overall winner with Munster worthy runners up.
BLS Chair, Anne Taylor, said: “Our team of 10 sailors would like to thank the organisers of the event; although conditions turned very wet on the Sunday, we thrived on the close quarters sailing in moderate winds and in the safe confines of Dun Laoghaire Harbour.
“Some unfortunate gear failure did not mar our enjoyment of racing alongside fellow sailors with disabilities and their crew members from all over Ireland. Belfast Lough Sailability is looking forward to hosting the Presidents Cup in our home town of Carrickfergus in the not too distant future.”
