Hansa Training weekend
On Saturday 30 May 2015 Belfast Lough Sailability’s sailors enjoyed their practice session out on Belfast Lough as the majestic cruise liner ‘MARINA’ made her way into Belfast Docks on a visit to NI. The colourful little dinghies were a marked contrast but in the sheltered waters of Belfast Lough there is room for everyone.
The fleet of 6 hansa dinghies had been launched that morning so that the crew could train for the forthcoming Hansa Championship, which is to take place in Carrickfergus on the 1st and 2nd August 2015. The Hansa small sail boat is especially designed to enable those with disabilities to participate in the sport of sailing and although small with only room for two it is a safe and sturdy vessel.
Comic Relief provided funding for Belfast Lough Sailability (BLS) over the past year and the hansa training programme was one of the aspects of the funding. Thank you Comic Relief. Instructor led training took place for the 6 hansa crews both on and off the water with the theory sessions being held in front of Carrickfergus Sailing Club on what was a perfect day.
BLS is looking forward to the Hansa Championships in Carrickfergus in August this year, which is attracting competitors from all over Ireland and further afield. This is the first time this event is being held in Northern Ireland and we hope there will be more in the future.
