Thomas Bruton’s Adventure Journey

On Tuesday 6 December, our friend Thomas Bruton will be presented with the President’s Award Gold Gaisce by the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins – five years after learning about the Award from Duke of Edinburgh Award volunteer Alex Palmer at The Lighthouse Trust, Donaghadee, and working through the Bronze and Silver Gaice. Thomas had attended Sailability sessions with us before and decided to join our Halifax Foundation for Northern Ireland supported 2016 Summer Scheme at Carrickfergus last July for the Award’s Adventure Journey module. A trio of BLS 2.4mRs

Our 2.4-Metre (2.4mR) Para World Sailing Class fleet has risen to three with the debut of Mathilde, who waltzed onto Belfast Lough recently to join sisters Peg and Skye – allowing us to expand our racing fleet and capabilities going towards the 2017 Presidents Cup and beyond.

We were delighted to host a Royal Yachting Association Northern Ireland run, SportNI sponsored weekend training camp at Carrickfergus Marina and Harbour on 23 & 24 January for coach/ volunteer training towards The Paralympic Pathway. On Saturday 30 May 2015 Belfast Lough Sailability’s sailors enjoyed their practice session out on Belfast Lough as the majestic cruise liner ‘MARINA’ made her way into Belfast Docks on a visit to NI. Winter training programme commences

As the colder days settle in, Belfast Lough Sailability (BLS) is getting down to serious training sessions so that there will be more qualified instructors to enable and support those with disabilities and disadvantaged through circumstance to enjoy ‘on the water experiences’ in the 2015 season.
